Cisco VPN Flaw Could Crash Your Firewall and Stop Remote Access

A serious security flaw has been found in Cisco’s firewall VPN software that could let attackers crash the device and cause a denial of service. This matters because it can disrupt your business’s remote access and network protection.

29 October 2026

Reference: CVE-2026-76418

1. What is being reported?

There is a vulnerability in Cisco’s Secure Firewall products that handle remote VPN connections. If the firewall is set up to require extra authentication steps, an attacker can send a special request that causes the device to restart unexpectedly, cutting off VPN access.

2. What this means in plain English

If exploited, this flaw could temporarily stop your firewall from working properly, meaning remote workers might lose access to your network and your business could be vulnerable during the downtime. It does not let attackers take control or steal data, but the disruption can affect daily operations.

3. Could this affect a small business?

Small businesses using Cisco Secure Firewall ASA or Threat Defense with remote VPN and secondary authentication are at risk. If you don’t use Cisco firewalls or don’t have remote VPN set up this way, you are probably not affected.

4. What to do now

  • Check if your organisation uses Cisco Secure Firewall ASA or Threat Defense with remote SSL VPN and secondary authentication.
  • Ask your IT provider if your firewall software is up to date and if patches for this vulnerability have been applied.
  • If patches are not yet installed, consider temporarily disabling secondary authentication on VPN tunnel groups until fixed.
  • Monitor your firewall and VPN services for unusual restarts or connection issues.

5. Ask your IT provider

Can you confirm if our Cisco firewall VPN software is patched against the CVE-2026-76418 vulnerability that causes device crashes with secondary authentication?

6. Bottom line

Make sure your Cisco firewall VPN is updated to prevent attackers from disrupting your remote access.
